The BBC
reports today that David Cameron has put forward a proposal to local
authorities that they can keep 100% of the business rates collected from shale
gas scheme, bringing this highly controversial issue into the forefront of the
news again. This is a separate proposal to the mining industries pledge
to give local communities £100,000 for test drilling plus a 1% share of revenue
if shale gas is found. Whatever your views on fracking, I think it is a good
thing to get everyone talking about the issue, particularly as it is not a
matter that is simply going to disappear.
